American History in London

London is dotted with numerous areas of American historical interest. Grosvener Square, home to the former U.S.Embassy, the Reagan Statue, the FDR Statue, the Eisenhower statue, the RAF Eagle squadron memorial and the former residence of John Adams, is perhaps the most prolific example of this. Nevertheless more unexpected places also contains interesting pieces of America's London past. The Texas embassy in Westminster is one such site, the burial site of John Smith in the City another.

Of course London is not the only place in England with ties to the United States. Plymouth, with the Mayflower Steps Memorial and Mayflower Passengers Plaque, is the most notable example of an English town associated with America. However other areas such as Gravesend, where Pocahontas is buried, have also, either by pure chance or clear purpose, formed part of America's history.

I am constantly looking to document more sites and improve those articles already written. I am also currently looking at the possibility of starting a guided walking tour of American History in London. Part of this process is gauging potential interest, so if you like what you read on this website and would be interested in seeing this information in the format of a guided tour, please comment directly on any of the article or email me at
americanhistorylondon@gmail.com.

I should also say that I have not yet had the chance to visit the statue of Pocahontas in Gravesend and so the article above is merely formed of preliminary information. I will update this once I have visited the site. Please check back regularly to read new articles. Hope you enjoy!
